New York’s canal system annually supports nearly $6.3 billion in non-tourism economic activity statewide, including $775 million in the Finger Lakes region along with 3,288 jobs, state officials announced this week.

The canal system is directly or indirectly responsible for 26,472 jobs statewide that provide nearly $1.7 billion in personal income and $702 million in tax revenue, data contained in a study commissioned by the New York State Canal Corp.

Finger Lakes canals directly support 1,239 jobs, with total employment of 3,288 jobs, totaling $221.6 million in personal income, the report shows. They generate $89.8 million in tax revenues, including $35.7 million in local and state taxes and $54.1 million in federal taxes.

Three projects near the canal system have been completed in the last three years in Rochester and the Finger Lakes region, with eight projects in various stages of development, the study states. The projects account for $82 million in investment.

Renewable power generated at 27 hydroelectric facilities along the canal system can power 54,000 homes, the study states. The canals also supply water for operations at research and development facilities.
