Retailers agree to unit pricing for online, mobile apps

A new initiative by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman will bring unit pricing to the websites and mobile apps of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Costco Wholesale Corp., Walgreen Co., CVS Caremark Corp., Fresh Direct LLC, and Drugstore.com Inc.

The information is slated to be provided by Walmart and Costco by the end of the year, and for Walgreens, CVS, FreshDirect and Drugstore.com by March 2015, the attorney general’s office said.

Unit pricing information allows customers to compare the prices of items disregarding packaging size, manufacturer, quantity or discounts. The unit price takes into account these factors and produces a price per ounce. 

“We need to ensure that consumers have the same robust protections online that they do in brick-and-mortar stores,” Schneiderman said in a statement.

New York requires large retailers to provide unit pricing in stores for over-the-counter medications, toiletries, pet food and most food, cleaning and paper products.

Peapod LLC, an online only store, was the only large retailer to provide full online unit pricing prior to Schneiderman’s initiative, the attorney general’s office said.
