Paul Cronin, the leader of HSBC Bank USA N.A. commercial banking in Upstate New York before and after the sale of its retail branches to First Niagara Bank N.A., has joined First Niagara as head of its capital markets group, officials announced Thursday.

Cronin is senior vice president and senior managing director of capital markets, with a focus on loan syndications and private placements, representatives of First Niagara said.

He will oversee First Niagara’s international trade and foreign exchange services and lead development of new capital markets products and services.

Cronin was regional president for commercial banking for Upstate New York and the Midwest U.S. when HSBC sold its upstate retail branches to First Niagara in May 2012. He was promoted to head of corporate banking for New York City and the northeast in October 2012 and has been based in New York City.

A native of Ireland, Cronin will operate out of First Niagara offices in Norwalk, Conn., and Philadelphia, officials said.

Based in Buffalo, First Niagara ranks fifth in the Rochester market with local deposits of $1.3 billion, data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. show.
