Merger of RGHS, Unity now official

Rochester Business Journal
July 1, 2014

Rochester General Hospital System and Unity Health System made their merger official on Tuesday, filing documents to legally cement their long-planned joining.

The filing follows a vote by the local health systems’ boards last month approving the move and approvals won from state and federal regulators.

Work to integrate the new system’s far-flung components into a functional unit is expected to take years, officials have predicted.

In addition to Rochester General Hospital in Rochester and Unity Hospital in Greece, the new health system includes hospitals in Ontario, Wayne and Genesee counties, medical practices scattered throughout a four-county territory, ACM Medical Laboratory Inc. and other facilities including nursing homes, senior housing and a home care organization.

The merger makes the roughly 12,000 employee system—yet to be named—the area’s second-largest private employer.

RGHS and Unity last month announced a leadership team consisting of executives from both systems. Unity CEO Warren Hern and RGHS CEO Mark Clement said at that time they each would step down after the new system’s board named a new CEO.

The merged systems’ board plans its first meeting July 9.
