B&L recalls some eye ointment

Rochester Business Journal

Bausch & Lomb Inc. has voluntarily pulled some 880,000 tubes of its Muro 128 eye ointment off store shelves.

The eye-care company pulled the product, an over-the-counter salve to treat corneal edema, after hearing consumer complaints that crystals had formed in some tubes, Bausch & Lomb stated in a May 30 recall notice.

Bausch & Lomb notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of the recall and mounted its own investigation, the notice stated. It cited possible ill effects from use of affected ointment as including eye irritation, abrasions and corneal injury.

Bausch & Lomb has since blamed the weather for the salve’s crystallization, citing exposure of some Muro 128 lots to below zero temperatures during last winter’s Polar Vortex as the probable reason for spoilage, the online industry newsletter Fierce Pharma Manufacturing reported yesterday.

An FDA notice states the recall’s initiation date as April 10. The May notice was sent to retailers, wholesalers and eye-care professionals but not to consumers, the industry newsletter said.
