The Rochester Business Journal has been recognized in the National Newspaper Association’s 2014 Better Newspaper Contest for work published in 2013.

Columnist Scott Pitoniak earned a first-place award in the category of best sports column for his piece on how former Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson persuaded his American Football League peers to postpone the league’s games scheduled for the Sunday following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

In the category of best serious column, Editor Paul Ericson received a third-place award for his column on what entrepreneurs could learn from PGA Championship winner Jason Dufner’s play at Oak Hill Country Club.

And Associate Editor Smriti Jacob received an honorable mention in the category of best business feature story for her article, “Appetite for risk,” on controversial entrepreneur and real estate developer Lyjha Wilton.

The NNA awards will be presented Oct. 4 during the association’s annual convention in San Antonio, Texas. The contest drew nearly 1,900 entries.
