Fundraising for a $4.8 million nature center at Letchworth State Park has surpassed the $1 million mark, officials announced this week.

The campaign was launched in May by the Letchworth Nature Committee after five years of planning, with a goal of raising $1.6 million. Committee chairman Peter Humphrey kicked off the campaign with a $300,000 donation.
“Reaching the $1 million mark is a tremendous achievement,” Humphrey said in a statement released this week. “Every contribution, both big and small, puts us one step closer to making this a reality.”

The committee hopes to raise another $600,000 by the end of the year, officials said.

A groundbreaking is scheduled for spring, with the center to open in spring 2016.
