The University of Rochester has named a new chief advancement officer, tapping an alum who had been serving as chief development officer at the University of Illinois.

UR announced Wednesday that Thomas Farrell would take over in the position beginning Nov. 1. He replaces James Osterholt, who was named interim chief advancement officer in September 2013.

“Tom Farrell is a highly experienced star in advancement. I am delighted that he will soon be leading our advancement team," said Joel Seligman, UR president, in a statement. "He brings strong Rochester connections as an alumnus and as someone who began his career in our advancement office. Since then, he has established an exceptional track record of fundraising leadership at the highest level."

Farrell joins UR in the midst of a $1.2 billion capital campaign. He has more than 24 years of advancement experience, beginning in 1990 as a class campaign fundraiser at UR.

“President Seligman and the broader leadership of the university have set Rochester on a very clear path, anchored in its tradition of a deep commitment to excellence, which has included a concerted effort to further improve its advancement program,” Farrell said.
