Schumer visits Orleans County to support legislation

Sen. Charles Schumer on Thursday announced his support for legislation that increases funding for hazardous waste cleanup, including the former Diaz Chemical Corp. plant in Holley, Orleans County.

“We need to infuse the Superfund program with the money needed to finally clean up super messes like that left by Diaz Chemical here in Holley,” said Schumer, D-Brooklyn.

“The lack of progress in cleaning up the former Diaz Chemical site has put a strain on the town of Holley and Orleans County economy for over a decade now, lowering the tax base, hurting property values and thwarting efforts by local leaders to attract new businesses to come into the area and create jobs at a cleaned-up site.”

A plan is in place to revitalize the property, but insufficient funding in the federal Superfund program is preventing work from starting, Schumer said.

Schumer’s legislation would reinstate the requirement that industries causing the pollution contribute to Superfund cleanups. He promised also to secure additional funding through the budget process.

Diaz, a maker of agricultural chemicals, was the county’s largest employer until it closed in 2003 following a January 2002 explosion in a chemical mixing vessel.

It had occupied the site since the 1970s.
