Medication technician admits to stealing narcotics

A Rochester medication technician has pleaded guilty to stealing some 650 prescription narcotics from patients at the Heather Heights assisted living facility in Pittsford, officials said Friday.

Deborah Cleveland, 42, stole the narcotics from eight elderly patients and replaced them with similar-looking pills, a statement from the office of state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said.

Cleveland, no longer employed at Heather Heights, pleaded guilty in Pittsford Town Court to misdemeanor charges of first degree attempted scheme to defraud.

“All New Yorkers expect caregivers to provide appropriate treatment to seniors in our state’s nursing facilities, and our office will hold caregivers accountable when they violate the considerable trust that is placed in them,” Schneiderman said in the statement.

Cleveland is expected to receive probation and four weekends in the Monroe County Jail when she is sentenced by Judge John Bernacki on Oct. 16.

The investigation was conducted by the state Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, in conjunction with the state Department of Health’s Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement.

The victims range in age from 66 to 98. Cleveland stole 230 Oxycodone pills from the narcotics packs of one victim.
