Wegmans partners with seafood coalition

Wegmans Food Markets Inc. is partnering with the Gulf Seafood Marketing Coalition to provide customers with fresh seafood from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico through Sept. 6.

Wegmans also is launching a new proprietary brand of wild-caught, peeled and deveined shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico, to be sold year-round.

The coalition creates a network to connect the seafood community to the Gulf States in areas of tourism, restaurants, retailers and chefs.

"Partnering with the highly-respected and popular Wegmans chain will help the coalition share delicious flavors of the Gulf with our New England fans," said Joanne Zaritsky, marketing director for the Gulf Seafood Marketing Coalition, in a statement. "We are pleased to provide premium Gulf Coast seafood products to Wegmans customers while introducing a new, mouthwatering Gulf shrimp brand that will make meal preparation for consumers both enjoyable and delicious."

All 84 Wegmans locations will feature the seafood harvested from the Gulf of Mexico’s waters, which produce 69 percent of domestic shrimp.

On Friday, Wegmans will feature Gulf Coast seafood cooking demonstrations and educational grilling techniques, store officials said.

"Wegmans is dedicated to providing the freshest ingredients to our customers, helping to make great meals easy and affordable,” said David Wagner, vice president of seafood merchandising for Wegmans in a statement. “The savory Gulf of Mexico seafood flavors fit into this plan, and the Gulf Seafood Marketing Coalition is a great partner to us. We are confident that once customers taste our new Wegmans brand wild-caught Gulf of Mexico shrimp and learn easy preparation techniques, it will soon become a favorite."
