Wayne County airport loses federal funding

The Williamson-Sodus Airport in Wayne County has lost its annual allotment of $150,000 in federal funding, and Sen. Charles Schumer is pushing the Federal Aviation Administration to restore it, he said Thursday.

The airport is among nearly 300 unclassified airports nationwide in the upcoming National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems report scheduled to be released this fall, said Schumer, D-N.Y.

Its lack of classification as a local airport will prevent it from applying for the $150,000 from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, Schumer said.

The FAA divided general aviation airports into four categories in 2012 to make them eligible for funding, Schumer said. Nearly 500 airports were left unclassified, but 200 of those have since been reclassified.

“The FAA needs to alter its mistake in misclassifying the Williamson-Sodus Airport so that this vital hub of the regional economy can once again receive the vital federal investments it needs to grow and thrive,” Schumer said in a statement.
