Waste Management-owned site receives conservation award

High Acres Nature Area, owned by Waste Management Inc. in Perinton, has been honored with the 2015 International Conservation Award by the Wildlife Habitat Council, an international non-profit that accredits programs that create wildlife habitat on corporate lands. It has recognized 600 sites around the world.

The High Acres Nature Area comprises 250 acres with four miles of nature trails adjacent to the High Acres Landfill and Recycling Center in Fairport. Employees and community volunteers invest in conservation and education efforts through the nature area, officials said.

High Acres’ wetlands and preserved areas are habitats for amphibians, reptiles and several bird species. Since 2011 an environmental science graduate program at Rochester Institute of Technology has guided student research at the site. Student interns have conducted bird and vegetation studies.

“It is such an honor to be recognized for the hard work, passion and partnerships that go into our Wildlife Habitat Council programs,” said Nicole Fornof, manager of communications and municipal relations for Waste Management. “By transforming our buffer property into wildlife habitat and outdoor classrooms, we are enhancing the value of open space resources for the surrounding community.”
