Rochester Top 100: Strong economy has Sheridan Bros. moving

The local economy is humming, people are moving and Sheridan Bros. Moving Inc. is growing.

The family-owned moving company has seen a clip of steady growth as the economy continues to improve and more people are buying homes and moving both into and out of the area for new jobs.

“It continues to get busier for us, and our work continues to evolve,” said Mike Sheridan, the company’s president. “Every year lately has beat the previous year, and we’ve been growing at a rate of 20 percent or higher.”

The company is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its founding this year, and has seen considerable growth in that time. Sheridan Bros. opened in 1986 with two trucks, two drivers and two additional employees who helped with moves.

The city company, which now has a fleet of trucks, has not been in operation for 30 straight years. It closed in the early 1990s and reopened in 2003.

The company’s work is mostly on the residential side, which includes moves across the country and even internationally.

“For customers who are looking to move out of the country, we will go in and get everything prepared to ship,” said Jennifer Sheridan, human resources manager. “We then pick it up and have it all put in a container that can be shipped anywhere.

“For customers moving to Canada, we have the luxury of putting it all on our moving truck and just driving there, but we also move people to England and France.”

The company has built a strong local client base and often does repeat work for the same customers, Jennifer Sheridan noted. Word of mouth is a big driver of business, she said.

The reputation has grown so strong that the company does not devote resources to advertising—at least, not formally, she said.

“We really don’t need to work to get our name out there,” she said. “Our trucks are really the best at that. People see them everywhere they look, and it’s really getting our name around.”

Business also has picked up in the past few years as Rochester moves past the effects of the Great Recession and more people are looking to move.

“Over the last six or seven years we saw the housing market a bit more unstable, but it’s just getting stronger and stronger now and the employment market is very strong as well,” Mike Sheridan said. “And as the overall business economy improves, people are having more of an option to advance in their companies, which means they can often be moving outside of the region.”

This growth has helped Sheridan Bros. grow its on-site storage as well.

“We invested in a couple of flatbed trucks to bring containers to our site, whether they’re empty or full,” Mike Sheridan said. “A lot of that is a reflection of the strong housing market, where people are selling their homes too quickly and instead of grabbing a place to live, they would rather stick their stuff in a warehouse and find where they really want to live.”

As the residential side of its business remains strong, Sheridan Bros. also has moved into more industrial jobs, working with companies looking to upgrade offices. While the growth of the local economy has helped the company on the residential side, some of the local economic challenges are contributing to growth of the industrial side, he said.

“We’re seeing a lot of growth for the long-distance moves as so many people are leaving New York for other states,” he said.

Mike Sheridan expects more growth for Sheridan Bros. as it continues to build its reputation.

“We’ve always had a good reputation, and to grow there’s two things you always need to do—treat people like you would want to be treated, and to deliver on what you promise,” he said. “That is where we put our focus.”
