Rochester Top 100: IT firm prepares for continued steady growth

Given the U.S. presidential election and the changes happening in Europe today, 2016 has been a year of uncertainty, especially in information technology.

Brite Computers Inc., a second-generation, family-run IT provider, has helped its clients find stability as the industry and world continue to evolve, said Justin Smith, president and chief operating officer.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty out there now,” Smith said. “We definitely are concerned about who ends up becoming a leader of this great nation. What’s happening in Europe and Asia is (also) a concern.”

Things are always going to be somewhat uncertain in the IT space.

“Is there really any more uncertainty today than there was yesterday or five years ago? It’s just a different level of uncertainty,” he said. “There’s always somebody that is pessimistic; there’s always somebody that’s optimistic; and I try to be realistic. We need to make sure that we continue to understand our customers’ business goals and objectives and build solutions to help them resolve those issues and maintain stability for the future.”

The company, based in Victor, Ontario County, employs 52 people spread throughout the country. It provides network and data security, virtualization, computing infrastructure and managed services.

Company officials plan to add six employees, including a couple here, by 2016’s end.

The company was founded by John Smith, father of the company’s leaders Justin and Trevor, some 33 years ago.

The growth of the company over the years has been due to preparation, said Trevor Smith, executive vice president.

“The growth is pretty continuous and steady. We attribute it to the quality of our employees and the hard work that they’re putting in, but also the need in the market just continues to grow,” he said.

The main areas of focus for the company continue to be in the verticals of health care, finance, higher education and public safety.

Cybersecurity has grown in importance for the company’s clients over the years.

“It’s just the Wild West out there, and we continue to see customers and clients get breached or attacked on a daily basis, an hourly basis in some cases,” Justin Smith said. “Most of the time many of the attacks are being mitigated, but we’re still seeing issues.”

The company is seeking to expand its reach. It operates in 40 of the 48 contiguous states. Florida and Texas are states the company is looking to for expansion.

“Our investments in people are investments that should give us broader reach across the country,” Justin Smith said. “We’re not losing sight of the fact that we are a Rochester, Victor, New York-based company. We are based here; we’re not planning on moving anytime soon, (but) we’re looking to expand our reach.”

This year the company launched the Brite Legacy Tour, a marketing campaign to help customers understand Brite’s depth of experience.

“We’re very dedicated to the Rochester region and Upstate New York,” Trevor Smith said. “We’re a family-run business, and it’s not just about a business, it’s about growing our business within our community. There’s something that feels really good about being able to protect those companies that we’ve seen grow to great success within the Rochester area and to provide them with great solutions.”

“There’s competition popping up all over the place, and everybody is trying to do similar type of stuff and jump on the same bandwagon that we’ve jumped on,” Trevor Smith said.

The company’s longevity has been a selling point for clients in an industry where many companies are relatively young. Brite Computers has been in the public safety realm for 17 years and has offered cybersecurity for its clients for over a decade.

The Rochester Chamber Top 100 program is presented by the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce and KPMG LLP. Launched in 1987, it recognizes the fastest-growing private companies in Greater Rochester. The 2016 Rochester Top 100 event will be held Nov. 3. For more information, go to
