Rochester Chamber Top 100: Company keeps its focus on the future

Soleo Communications Inc. has continued to grow by being attuned to what is coming next.

“We are first and foremost a search engine (company) that was specifically built to help consumers make useful connections to local businesses,” said Daniel Gallagher, CEO and chairman. “Because we white-label our search engine to big-name brands, we are relatively unknown outside of the markets we serve.”

The cloud-based software firm grew revenues by 25 percent last year and anticipates revenue growth again this year but declined to provide its target.

“The last few years have been very active; supporting a period of high organic growth but also investing in the development of future products the market is demanding,” said Peter Juroe, chief financial officer and chief administrative officer. “I believe the company positioned itself very well to capture growth opportunities over the past few years and has an exciting vision to continue doing so in the future.”

The firm has its headquarters at High Point Drive in Victor and has a data management facility in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. It employs 56 locally and has 65 total staffers.

This fall, the company plans to launch an advanced search engine that uses natural language understanding to enable users to find local businesses, officials said.

“Staying ahead of the curve is very challenging in the tech space; on one hand technology companies need to have a solid long-term strategy, but they also need to be adept and able to change quickly in order to capitalize on short-lived profit pools when the opportunity arises,” Juroe said. “Balancing all of this and continuing to build long-term shareholder value are the largest challenges we face.”

Most of the company’s customers are based on the West Coast. Much of last year’s growth was driven by signing up the companies that purchase leads from the company, Gallagher said.

“These leads are generated from consumers that search our various applications and then place a telephone call to the merchant that was discovered during the search,” he said. “Most of our focus has been on domestic searches, but we expect to expand internationally once we have all of the core elements in place.”

One challenge is the firm’s size.

“The work we do is typically done by bigger companies with lots of technical resources,” Gallagher said. “We need to demonstrate we can add value by being really good at our specialized work in the overall artificial intelligence space.”

Soleo Communications offers customers the technology they seek, and officials are ready for the tech industry’s upcoming changes.

“The company focuses on unique opportunities to solve vexing search technology challenges for the soon-to-occur explosion in the adoption of Internet of Things, exciting Silicon Valley-type technology, right here in Rochester,” Juroe said.

Local talent has helped the firm plan for its future. This summer Soleo Communications added interns who set the stage for the company’s next growth targets.

“We are grateful to have deep relationships with the local universities,” Gallagher said. “This summer we hired 26 highly talented student interns that helped us to build the next set of search services we plan to launch this fall.”

The Rochester Chamber Top 100 program is presented by the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce and KPMG LLP. Launched in 1987, it recognizes the fastest-growing private companies in Greater Rochester. The 2016 Rochester Top 100 event will be held Nov. 3. For more information, go to
