Rochester Chamber Top 100: The company is focused on building its team

A.E.Y. Enterprises Inc.’s game plan going forward is to continue to improve efficiencies and provide top-notch customer service.

“(We’re focused on) building a team that approaches each job with the same goals: on time, on budget and to the highest satisfaction of the customer,” President Michael Young said.

Hard work and perseverance are what grew A.E.Y. Enterprises and continue to drive its goals, he added.

Young started the commercial and residential site construction company in 1989. It has continued to grow in terms of sales and staff.

The business, located in Macedon, Wayne County, posted a 14.2 percent increase in annual sales in 2015, and Young expects a 22.8 percent sales increase in 2016.

“We expect continued growth,” Young said.

His company employs 37 workers, up from 34 in 2015 and 30 in 2014.

Young does not expect employment to change dramatically in the short term.

“Our focus is on continued monitoring and training of existing employees and furthering our commitment on systems and efficiency,” he said.

As more companies struggle with identifying qualified labor, Young said his firm’s No. 1 challenge is to continue developing the systems that will allow the business to train and nurture in-house talent, resulting in a “promote from within” business model.

“Our employees are one of the key reasons for our success,” Young said.

Young, who grew up in Wayne County, initially was drawn to mechanical work and tinkered with projects on his own. He built a dump truck, which he planned on selling before being approached about using the truck to complete jobs himself. He launched A.E.Y. Enterprises when he was in his early 20s.

The company provides commercial and residential site clearing, development and construction services as well as delivery services for residential and commercial landscaping, with regular deliveries scheduled for topsoil, sand, mulch and crushed stone and gravel.

A.E.Y. Enterprises in 2012 created a sister company, A.E.Y. Engineering DPC, which offers professional civil engineering services.

A.E.Y. Enterprises predominantly does business in Monroe, Ontario and Wayne counties, but has completed jobs in Genesee and Orleans counties as well.

A portion of its work comes from commercial customers such as auto dealers, banks and chains, including Tim Hortons Inc. and Dunkin’ Donuts.

A.E.Y. Enterprises recently did work on a multimillion building project in Walworth, Wayne County, for McAlpin Industries Inc. and Your Sports Depot Inc.

Other jobs it has completed include concrete and masonry work on the restoration of the Edward E. Boynton House, a structure designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the East Avenue Preservation District, and the Eyer Building renovation on West Commercial Street in East Rochester.

The diversity of the firm’s projects helps it grow, Young said. Referrals also have generated business.

One customer for A.E.Y. Enterprises is Maier Consulting & Construction LLC in Rochester.

Carl Maier, owner and president, said it can be difficult to find contractors who can work cooperatively on a project and understand the complications that can sometimes occur.

That is especially true with firms that do the work A.E.Y. Enterprises does, since it requires digging underground where there could be unknowns.

A.E.Y. Enterprises, however, is a helpful partner to have on the job, Maier said.

“They’re cooperative and really understand the job,” Maier said. “They come to the table with solutions.”

The Rochester Chamber Top 100 program is presented by the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce and KPMG LLP. Launched in 1987, it recognizes the fastest-growing private companies in Greater Rochester. The 2017 Rochester Top 100 event is slated to be held Nov. 2. For more information, go to
