Writers & Books poll shows top literary characters

Writers & Books Inc. has released the poll results for its “Top 20 Literary Characters” of all time.

Writers & Books said nearly 200 Rochester-area residents took part in the poll, submitting their five favorite characters via email and Twitter.

Topping the list was Atticus Finch, the main character from "To Kill a Mockingbird." Scout Finch, also from "To Kill a Mockingbird," came in second. The top 10:

1. Atticus Finch
2. Scout Finch
3. Elizabeth Bennet (“Pride and Prejudice”)
4. Lisbeth Salander (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”)
5. Harry Potter
6. Jane Eyre
7. Sherlock Holmes
8. Anne Shirley (“Anne of Green Gables”)
9. Scarlet O’Hara (“Gone with the Wind”)
10. Jo March (“Little Women”)
