Hearing moved up in DSS suit against Coupons.com

A hearing in a lawsuit filed by Document Security Systems Inc. against former client Coupons.com Inc. has been moved up.

The motions hearing scheduled for Oct. 9 now is set for Aug. 16 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York, the local company said. DSS filed the lawsuit last October, alleging Coupons.com misappropriated DSS trade secrets.

DSS provides optical anti-counterfeit technology to its clients to protect documents from counterfeiters and identity thieves. DSS said Coupons.com was a client from 2003 to 2008, purchasing anti-copying paper.

California-based Coupons.com allows online shoppers to print coupons from manufacturers and retailers. The company’s clients include Kraft Foods Inc., Johnson & Johnson and Kmart Corp.

The lawsuit revolves around DSS’ proprietary digital copy protection technology. DSS claims in the lawsuit that Coupons.com has used the technology on billions of Internet generated coupons since 2006.
