Non-profit Report
Rochester Business Journal
September 7, 2012

Garth Fagan Dance Inc. has an international reputation, having performed throughout the United States, elsewhere in North America and in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Near and Middle East, South America, New Zealand, Australia and the West Indies.
The company, now celebrating its 40th anniversary, continues to be led by its namesake, the founding artistic director. Fagan, a native of Jamaica, won a Tony Award for best choreography in 1998 for his work in "The Lion King"-among other honors. Critics have described his dance style as original, distinctive and even idiosyncratic, combining Afro-Caribbean, ballet, modern and post-modern elements.
The coming season is slated to begin with an anniversary gala Sept. 27 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music that includes the premiere of "Lighthouse/Lightning Rod," a work choreographed by Fagan with music composed and arranged by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. That performance and those on the next three nights during the BAM Next Wave Festival are to feature the Wynton Marsalis Septet.
The troupe is to perform Nov. 27 to Dec. 2 at the Nazareth College Arts Center, its home venue. Other performances are scheduled for Scottsdale, Ariz., in November and for Des Moines, Iowa, and Columbia, Mo., in February.
The organization also operates the Garth Fagan Dance School, which offers classes in fall, winter and spring for children, young adults ages 13 to 30 and adults over 30. Its Summer Movement Institute is an intensive three-week workshop in Fagan's technique. More than 40 percent of students in the regular classes and 70 percent of those in the institute receive financial aid.
During its home performances, Garth Fagan Dance offers free lecture-demonstrations at local schools to help students understand dance. The organization also has had annual partnerships with schools and other groups to bring dance classes and instruction on health and nutrition to disadvantaged children. By tradition the dance school also offers free workshops for people of all ages on Martin Luther King Day.
Garth Fagan Dance has 21 full- and part-time employees; Fagan is artistic director, and Ruby Lockhart is executive director. The office address is 50 Chestnut St., and the website is
