Nursing home consortium wins federal grant

The Greater Rochester Nursing Home Consortium has won an $800,000 federal grant, officials said Tuesday.

The organization is a 3-year-old collaborative among area long-term care facilities and other health care organizations. It includes 18 nursing homes, mostly in rural areas, and intends to partly use the grant to expand its nursing home membership.

Other planned uses for the federal money are: helping area nursing homes develop quality assurance programs needed to comply with Affordable Care Act requirements and to fund scholarships for nurses interested in becoming nurse practitioners or in obtaining post-master’s certification in adult gerontology through the University of Rochester School of Nursing. Ten part-time and two full-time scholarships are planned.

The three-year grant is part of a $30.2 million distributed by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration to further nursing workforce development.
