Thomas Golisano presented a $3 million check to the Special Olympics on Thursday at an event honoring local health care professionals who demonstrated extraordinary work to improve health care and access to care for people with intellectual disabilities.

The event, the 2012 Leadership Awards for Exemplary Health Care Services, was put on by the B. Thomas Golisano Foundation. The keynote speaker was Timothy Shriver, chairman and CEO of Special Olympics International.

The event honored the awardees’ work on behalf of the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes program, the world’s largest public health screening and education program for people with intellectual disabilities, foundation officials said.

“By recognizing those who have led the way and demonstrated their dedication to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities, we hope to improve access and healthcare,” said Ann Costello, Golisano Foundation director. “The individuals we are honoring have promoted acceptance, dignity and inclusion in their work, and they value people with intellectual disabilities as people who can contribute and be a vital part of the community.”

Each honoree was presented with a Tiffany crystal award and a $5,000 donation made by the Golisano Foundation in their names to the charity of their choice that helps people with intellectual disabilities.

Honorees were:

  • Maricelle Abayon of Special Smiles,
  • Joseph Carbone of Fit Feet,
  • Lisa DeLucia of Special Smiles,
  • Mary Kate Gedro of Fit Feet,
  • Mark Orlando of  Healthy Hearing and
  • Amy Pete of FUNfitness.
