AirTran in Rochester to convert to Southwest in April

AirTran Airways operations at Greater Rochester International Airport will be converted to Southwest Airlines in April, officials announced Thursday.

Rochester is one of four airports being converted as a result of Southwest’s acquisition of AirTran in 2011, officials said.

Some 18 percent of passengers departing from the Rochester airport use AirTran, third-highest among airlines here, officials said. AirTran flies nonstop from Rochester to Atlanta, Baltimore, Orlando and Tampa.

“Our airport is already one of the most affordable and outstanding facilities of its size in the nation, and Southwest’s presence here will do even more to expand on that success,” Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks said in a statement.
