Storm impact less than feared locally

City and county leaders breathed a collective sigh of relief Tuesday, with the impact of Hurricane Sandy appearing to be less than feared.

States of emergency issued Monday by Rochester and Monroe County were canceled as of 9:30 a.m., and emergency shelters were in the process closing.

Residents along Lake Ontario were told to evacuate their homes Monday as the storm moved in.

“The weather has begun to clear up and, all things considered, things weren’t that bad,” Rochester Mayor Thomas Richards said in a statement.

“But for those who lost power or experienced property damage, this was an awful storm. We chose to evacuate due to the strong, northeasterly winds coming off Lake Ontario, and we had around 1,000 residents lose power.”

The city plans to compile cost estimates for damages and for personnel involved in storm activities, officials said.

The shelter at the Dome Arena in Henrietta was to remain open until County Executive Maggie Brooks was certain all displaced residents can return to their homes, county officials said.
