Tops Markets to expand with acquisition

Rochester Business Journal
December 6, 2012

Tops Markets LLC, which has more than 150 supermarket locations in the Northeast including more than 20 in Greater Rochester, is continuing to expand.

The company announced Thursday it has entered into an agreement to acquire three Big M supermarkets in the northern and central New York towns of Elbridge and Jordan in Onondaga County, and Mexico in Oswego County.

“We are excited about this growth opportunity for Tops, as we bring these new stores into the Tops family,” said Frank Curci, Tops Markets’ president and CEO, in a statement. “These stores are a natural addition to our current footprint.”

The acquisition is the third this year for Tops. The company’s biggest acquisition of the year came when it purchased 21 Grand Union stores in Upstate New York and Vermont from GU Markets LLC.

Based in Williamsville, Erie County, Tops has more than 125 locations in Upstate New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont.
