RFP issued for charging stations for electric vehicles

A statewide initiative to install 3,000 charging stations for electric vehicles, including 13 in the Rochester area, picked up steam Thursday with the issuance of a request for proposals for 100 stations in the New York City area.

The plug-in hybrid stations are part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Charge NY initiative, which would create a network of up to 3,000 public and workplace stations over five years and result in up to 40,000 plug-in vehicles on roadways.

PepsiCo Inc.’s Frito-Lay Division is getting $350,000 from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to install 10 charging stations at its distribution center in Henrietta and 10 at its distribution site in Albany.

South Bristol, Ontario County-based MyFleetDept.com is getting $72,000 from NYSERDA to install three stations at Rochester Institute of Technology for use by students and staff, state officials said.

MyFleetDept.com is one of 14 organizations funded by $3.6 million from NYSERDA, officials said. Most of the stations will have dual charges to accommodate two vehicles at the same time.

The latest round of NYSERDA funding follows the award of $4.4 million in June 2012.

The RFP issued Thursday is for 100 stations at 36 locations, primarily in the New York City area, officials said. The stations are expected to begin operations in 2014.
