Director of URMC institute to leave for Fla. job

The director of the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute is leaving.

Thomas Pearson M.D., associate senior dean for clinical research, plans to take a position with a Florida academic medical center, URMC officials said Friday. Pearson is slated to start as vice president for research and education at the University of Florida Health Sciences Center on Oct. 1.

Along with former UR School of Medicine and Dentistry dean David Guzick M.D., Pearson helped secure a $40 million National Institutes of Health grant to establish the URMC clinical translational center in 2006.

Guzick moved to the University of Florida as head of its health system in 2009.

URMC’s NIH award— one of the largest grants URMC has won—helped the Rochester school set up its institute as one of the first dozen established in the country. As its director, Pearson helped organize an 18-institution Upstate New York medical research consortium.

To cut the time it takes for biomedical discoveries to move from the laboratory to practical applications, NIH the past several years has financed a network of such institutes at dozens of academic medical centers, including the University of Florida Health Sciences Center.

“(Pearson’s) role in the creation of the (URMC) CTSI and the Saunders Research Building--which is the culmination of a decade-long effort to create academic home for clinical research at URMC—will stand as lasting testament to his vision and leadership,” said Mark Taubman M.D, dean of the UR School of Medicine and Dentistry.

URMC plans a national search for a new leader of the institute.
