The opening of El Pilon Criollo on North Clinton Avenue marks the first new construction in the La Avenida corridor in 12 years, officials said Friday.

City of Rochester officials and restaurant owners cut the ribbon Friday for the relocation of El Pilon Criollo, which opened in 2008.

El Pilon Criollo is a takeout restaurant specializing in traditional Hispanic food such as rice and bean dishes, fried pork, baked and fried chicken, stew, ribs and fritters.

The family business is run by Zury Brown and her three daughters.

“One of the great pleasures of being mayor is coming out to meet with business owners like Zury Brown, who started as a small vendor at the Puerto Rican Festival, then opened a restaurant and has now expanded her business with this beautiful new space,” Rochester Mayor Thomas Richards said in a statement.

The restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The $285,870 investment includes a $114,000 city loan, officials said.

La Avenida area extends from Upper Falls Boulevard to Avenue D.
