RBJ 75 showcases region's top companies and non-profits

Rochester Business Journal
July 26, 2013

The region’s largest private-sector employer has extended its lead. The University of Rochester since last July has added more than 1,500 staffers, according to data published Friday in the RBJ 75, the Rochester Business Journal’s annual report on the area’s leading public and private companies and non-profits.

UR’s total local workforce has grown to nearly 22,000, in part through its merger with Thompson Health. The university is followed by Wegmans Food Markets Inc., with 13,579 employees, and Rochester General Health System, which employs 8,168 people.

Total employment for the RBJ 75 has edged upward, reaching 110,113 from 109,088—an increase of slightly less than 1 percent.

The area’s top 25 non-profit organizations employ 63,310 people, up 5.3 percent from 60,107 last year. The top 25 private-company workforce was essentially flat, slipping 14 people to 28,853 from 28,867. The 25 public companies among the RBJ 75 declined 10.8 percent, however, again largely due to downsizing at Eastman Kodak Co. and Xerox Corp. They now employ 17,950 versus 20,114 a year ago.

Among the public companies, Kodak now trails both Xerox and Paychex Inc. in total local employment.

Here are the leaders in other RBJ 75 categories:

  • Public company earnings: Xerox, $1.2 billion
  • Public company earnings growth: Home Properties Inc., 243.3 percent
  • Public company sales: Xerox, $22.4 billion
  • CEO compensation: Ursula Burns, Xerox, $13.1 million
  • Annualized 2012 total return to shareholders: Harris Interactive Inc., one-year return of 105.6 percent

The RBJ 75 special section appears as a supplement to the July 26 print edition of the Rochester Business Journal.
