St. John's is a senior services organization that offers an array of living options and health care services. Under the umbrella of the organization whose legal name is St. John's Senior Services Inc. are several related non-profits, including St. John's Home, which was incorporated in 1899 and has provided nursing home care for more than a century.
St. John's seeks to lead and inspire a shift in society's view of old age with an emphasis on vibrant, caring and life-affirming relationships. The organization has been an early participant in the Eden Alternative and Green House movements, which aim to change long-term nursing care by de-emphasizing its institutional character and giving elders greater autonomy in home-like settings.
Brickstone, a new St. John's community in Brighton, offers independent living in 40 apartments, nine townhomes and 53 bungalows. It is designed according to the principles of new urbanism as an intimate and walkable neighborhood with services nearby.
St. John's Meadows, also in Brighton, opened in 1998 and offers independent living in 339 two-bedroom cottages and apartments. The community includes the Hawthorne, 38 one-bedroom apartments where aides are constantly available for assistance with activities of daily living; services provided to residents include all meals, weekly housekeeping, laundry and transportation.
St. John's two new Green House homes, adjacent to each other in Penfield's Arbor Ridge subdivision, are based on an innovative concept in long-term nursing care. The homes offer all the services of a traditional nursing home in ranch-style residences for 10 elders each. St. John's says they are the first of their kind in the nation to be integrated into a residential neighborhood and not on the campus of a traditional nursing home.
St. John's Home, adjacent to Highland Park in Rochester, is a registered Eden Alternative nursing home. It can serve 475 people and provides skilled nursing care, Alzheimer's or dementia care, transitional care and rehabilitation, adult day services and hospice care.
St. John's Foundation was founded in 1992 to develop financial resources for St. John's services and programs and to support other health-related programs for elders in the Rochester area. Its current assets exceed $7 million.
The St. John's organization has 981 employees, and Charles Runyon is president and CEO. Its office is at St. John's Home, 150 Highland Ave., and its website is stjohnsliving.org.
