Mayor names Norwood health adviser to city

Rochester Business Journal
August 21, 2013

As part of a new Healthy by Choice initiative, Rochester Mayor Thomas Richards has named Finger Lakes Health Systems Agency director of community engagement Wade Norwood as the city’s key health adviser.

In addition to working to increase lead poisoning testing for city 1- and 2-year olds, Norwood hopes to achieve a 20 percent increase in participation in the city Youth Bureau’s Summer Meals initiative, a U.S. Department of Agriculture funded program to provide free breakfasts and lunches to residents 18 and younger.

A review of city codes and health related policies is planned under the new initiative, officials said. Areas to be reviewed include city lead inspections, complete streets policies and recreation programs.

Also coming under the new Healthy by Choice initiative is “Rochester has Heart,” a collaboration administered by the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Center for Community Health  and funded by a $3.6 million Centers for Disease Control and Prevention grant. Partners in Rochester has Heart include the city, Monroe County, URMC, FLSHA, FoodLink and the YMCA.
