The University of Rochester is getting a $1.1 million federal grant to research the prevention of HIV in minority communities, officials announced.

The funding comes from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention. It is the first round of funding for a five-year program for health departments.

“The CDC reports that over 244,000 Americans are unaware that they are living with HIV,” Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-Perinton, said in a statement this week announcing the funding.

“I know that through the University of Rochester’s efforts to screen and prevent HIV, people will become empowered to protect their health and reduce risk of transmission to others,” she said. “By determining the best practices for HIV prevention, we are investing in a stronger and healthier future.”
