Cabbage Patch Kids, Hot Wheels and chess are among 12 finalists vying for induction in the 2010 class of the National Toy Hall of Fame located at the Strong National Museum of Play, the Strong officials announced Friday.
After receiving thousands of nominations by mail and e-mail, a national selection committee will choose the two inductees for 2010, which will be announced Nov. 4.
The other nominees include: the dollhouse, dominoes, Dungeons & Dragons, The Game of Life, Lite Brite, Magic 8 Ball, playing cards, the pogo stick and Rubik’s Cube.
The National Toy Hall of Fame recognizes toys that have engaged and delighted multiple generations, inspiring them to learn, create and discover through play, museum officials said. Criteria for induction include: icon-status, longevity, how the toy fosters learning or discovery through play and whether the toy profoundly changed play or toy design.
To date, 44 toys have made it into the National Toy Hall of Fame including the yo-yo, bicycle, G.I. Joe and the cardboard box.
