The National Committee on Quality Assurance 2011-’12 health insurance-plan rankings rate Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield’s HMO and point of service offerings and MVP Health Care’s MVP Gold Medicare and Medicaid plan among the best U.S. health insurance offerings.

A private non-profit focused on health care, NCQA evaluated 483 private non-profit and for-profit U.S. HMO and POS plans nationally and some 403 private Medicaid and Medicare plans to arrive at the insurance-plan rankings. Factors it weighed include the scope and quality of care delivered to subscribers and customer satisfaction.

In the rankings, MVP’s MVP Gold came in as 15th best among private Medicare plans in the country, while Excellus’ HMO and POS plans were rated as 20th best.

NCQA ranked MVP’s HMO and POS plans as 47th best.

Excellus’ Medicare plan was rated 26th best by NCQA. Its Medicaid plans scored the 15th best slot.

Rochester–based Excellus and Schenectady-based MVP between them provide most of the Rochester region’s private health coverage.
