Atlantic names Rochester an innovation hub

Rochester has been listed as one of 35 innovation hubs in the country, according to a new report.

Washington D.C.-based magazine the Atlantic recently released its special report “Start-Up Nation: The search for the next Silicon Valley.”  The report examines why business flourish in some cities and fail in others.

Among the things included in the report was a list of 35 cities, called innovation hubs that foster entrepreneurs. Along with Rochester, the list included major cities such as Washington D.C., New York, and Boston, as well as smaller cities like Burlington, Vt. and Boise, Idaho.

The data was compiled by the Atlantic’s editorial staff and researchers from Arizona State University and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The list took into account a variety of economic factors, including the number of new start-up companies, accepted patents, and the number of entrepreneurs per million people.

Start-Up Nation also listed research centers in each city. Rochester was one of only six cities to have multiple centers listed, University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology.

The Atlantic publishes 10 times a year with a circulation of more than 400,000. It covers a variety of topics including literature, politics, foreign affairs and the economy.
