Monroe County expands alternative fuel program

Monroe County is adding four late-model Ford pickup trucks to its alternative fuel program, thanks to $42,000 from a $92,000 New York State Energy and Development Authority grant, county officials announced Tuesday.

The rest of the grant was used for infrastructure, officials said.

The trucks will use 9,600 gallons of liquid propane annually, saving 5,100 gallons of gasoline a year, officials said. The lifespan of the 2008 and 2009 trucks is 12 years.
 
The county fleet division oversees 1,100 vehicles, including the sheriff’s office and Greater Rochester International Airport fleets, officials said.

The county uses ethanol-based E85 in its flex-fuel vehicles and ethanol-based E20 in its traditional gas vehicles, officials said. It uses B5 and B20 biodiesel in its diesel vehicles.

The fleet division was ranked second among government green fleets in North America by Government Fleet magazine.
