New and used car sales in Monroe County showed year-over-year improvement in January, but fell from December sales, the Rochester Automobile Dealers’ Association Inc. reported.

Some 2,440 new cars and trucks were sold in January, an 18 percent decrease from 2,989 in December and a nearly 4 percent decrease from 2,529 a year ago. Area dealers sold 1,692 used vehicles last month, up nearly 3 percent from 1,648 in December and more than 14 percent from 1,484 in January 2011.

New-car sales typically decline from December to January, RADA historical data shows.

Monroe County auto dealers sold 4,132 new and used vehicles in January, compared with 4,637 in December and 4,013 a year ago.
