Saunders Research Building gets LEED gold certification

The University of Rochester Medical Center’s Saunders Research Building has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification.

It is the first building at the university to earn any level of LEED certification.

Established by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED certification is seen as the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. The certification is based on an evaluation of a building’s planning and design, energy savings, water efficiency, carbon dioxide emissions reduction, indoor environmental air quality and construction criteria.

“We are very proud that the Saunders Research Building has been recognized for its green design,” said Bradford Berk, CEO of URMC. “This designation is the product of an incredible team of individuals.”
The building uses a daylight harvesting system that maximizes exposure to sunlight. It also has an open floor plan that allows more natural light into the interior, and also has sensors that control light based on a room’s occupancy and the amount of natural light in it.

There is also a high efficiency HVAC system and heat-reflecting roof. These features allowed the building to participate in New York State Energy Research and Development Authority programs for energy efficiency.

The building, which opened last April, is home to the URMC Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the departments of community and preventive medicine and biostatistics and computational biology as well as independent research programs in several fields.
