Paychex wins gold at Best of the Web

Paychex Inc. took home the Gold overall award in the Rochester Business Journal's annual Best of the Web competition Tuesday. More than 200 people attended the event and workshop at the Hyatt Regency Rochester.

Newdigs.com received the Silver award, and Abbotts Frozen Custard won the Bronze.

Lollypop Farm Humane Society of Greater Rochester won in a new category this year that focused on social media efforts, measuring the extent to which companies and organizations use Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social media tools to engage customers and promote their work. The other two finalists in the social media category were Crosman Corp. and Unshackle Upstate.

Readers submitted hundreds of nominations for the 2012 Best of the Web. This year's finalists represent the top efforts among area businesses and non-profits. The competition included industry-specific awards:

Banking and finance
Manning & Napier Advisors  (www.manning-napier.com) won this category. The other finalists were Canandaigua National Bank & Trust (www.cnbank.com) and the Summit Federal Credit Union (www.summitfcu.org).

Business and professional services
Paychex (www.paychex.com) topped D4 LLC (www.d4discovery.com) and Document Security Systems (www.dsssecure.com).

Education
Rochester Institute of Technology’s College of Imaging Arts & Sciences (www.cias.rit.edu) took top honors in this category. The other finalists were Nazareth College of Rochester (www.naz.edu) and Pittsford Central School District (www.pittsfordschools.org).

Health care
Rochester Health Inc. (www.rochesterhealth.com) was the category winner. The other finalists were Elizabeth Wende Breast Care (www.ewbc.com) and Maplewood Nursing & Rehabilitation (www.visitmaplewood.com)

Hospitality and tourism
Woodcliff Hotel & Spa (www.woodcliffhotelandspa.com) earned top honors over
Lento Restaurant (www.lentorestaurant.com) and New York Golf Trail (www.nygolftrail.com).

Manufacturing
Gleason Corp. (www.gleason.com) topped Eastman Business Park (www.eastmanbusinesspark.com) and Light Fabrications (www.lightfab.com).

Non-profit (cultural)
Rochester City Ballet (www.rochestercityballet.com) earned top honors. The other finalists were Hochstein School of Music & Dance (www.hochstein.org) and the Landmark Society of Western New York (www.landmarksociety.org).

Non-profit (human services)
Child Care Council (www.childcarecouncil.com) won the category. ROC the Day (www.roctheday.org) and Rochester Mentors (www.rochestermentors.org) also were finalists.

Real Estate and Construction
Newdigs.com (www.newdigs.com) topped Morgan Communities (www.morgancommunities.com) and PayRentChex (www.payrentchex.com).

Retail
Abbotts Frozen Custard (www.abbottscustard.com) was the category winner. The other finalists were Sassafras Flowers (www.sassafrasflowers.com) and Skooba Design (www.skoobadesign.com).

Judges evaluated the finalist sites based on navigability, usability, functionality, content, visual design, standards compliance and use of social media.

Neal Schaffer, president of California-based Windmills Marketing LLC, a social media strategy consulting practice, delivered the keynote talk at the awards breakfast.

He discussed the importance of social media sites as well as the emergence of Google+ and Pinterest.

Schaffer also conducted a workshop after the breakfast on how to use social media to drive business.

The Rochester Business Journal launched its annual Best of the Web competition in 1996.
