Finger Lakes Community College is slated to get $3.3 million in state funds to build a viticulture center at the Cornell Agriculture and Food Technology Park in Geneva, state officials said Thursday.
The center will house FLCC’s Viticulture and Wine Technology program, the only one of its kind in the Northeast, officials said. It will include a wine-making lab and rooms for storage and aging wine, as well as classroom space and a teaching vineyard.
The state funds are included in the proposed state budget and were announced by state Sen. Michael Nozzolio, R-Fayette, and Assembly Minor Leader Brian Kolb, R-Canandaigua.
Proponents said the future location provides potential to expand the viticulture program through partnerships with Cornell University and other foods and agriculture organizations that use the park. Currently, FLCC’s program allows students to transfer to Cornell’s four-year viticulture program.
