The University of Rochester Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry has established an Injury Control Research Center for Suicide Prevention, officials said.
Funded by a five-year, $4.1 million Centers for Disease Control grant, the URMC center is one of 11 U.S. Injury Control Research Centers to win such a grant from the CDC.
To establish the center, URMC psychiatrists partnered with the Education Development Center Inc., a Waltham, Mass.-based non-profit organization, that provides suicide-prevention related technical assistance and outreach to states and local communities.
URMC Psychiatry Department chairman Eric Caine M.D. is principal investigator for the grant and director of the new center.
Psychiatry professor Yeates Conwell M.D will serve as co-director, along with Jerry Reed, director of Education Development Center’s Center for the Study and Prevention of Injury, Violence and Suicide.
The URMC center plans to work in the suicide prevention field nationally and internationally but concentrate on New York, New England and the Middle Atlantic states.
