University of Rochester Medical Center officials broke ground Monday on the $145 million Golisano Children’s Hospital.

Planned to rise on Crittenden Boulevard adjacent to URMC’s Strong Memorial Hospital, the eight-story, 245,000-square-foot pediatric hospital is the biggest building project URMC has undertaken.

All of the Golisano Hospital’s 52 rooms will be private. Planned for the facility are an expanded neonatal intensive care unit and family- and patient-friendly amenities such as suites where parents of patients can prepare and eat meals, do laundry and shower.

“Having the space to accommodate a patient’s family means they can truly be part of their child's care team. Children heal faster and more comfortably when they have their families with them while they are hospitalized,” URMC CEO Bradford Berk M.D. said.

Among others present at the ceremony were UR president Joel Seligman, Golisano Hospital and URMC pediatrics chief Nina Schor M.D. and Paychex Inc. chairman and philanthropist Thomas Golisano.

Officials project a 2015 opening for the hospital.
