UR, Lumetrics receive federal grants

The University of Rochester has been awarded nearly $1.9 million in federal grants to support the area’s advanced manufacturing activities in the areas of optics, photonics and imaging.

The money will support the development of the Rochester Regional Optics, Photonics and Imaging Accelerator program, which is aimed at strengthening education, workforce training, technology development and incubation to accelerate growth of optics, photonics and imaging companies, said Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-Perinton.

The project teams UR with the Rochester Regional Photonics Cluster and Rochester Institute of Technology.

Slaughter announced the grant at Henrietta-based Lumetrics Inc., which received $973,000 in federal funding for development of a digital handheld diagnostic ophthalmic instrument that company leaders said will improve access to vision-related healthcare worldwide.

Lumetrics is known for its OptiGauge system, which is designed to reduce production time and enhance quality for the manufacturers of medical devices, optics and industrial materials. The firm was founded in 2003 and employs roughly 20 workers.
