Wegmans stores have re-opened after hurricane

Wegmans Food Markets Inc. announced Tuesday that each of its 81 stores in six states were open and operating in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

The company’s newest stores are equipped with pad-mounted generators that help keep stores operational and maintain refrigeration temperatures for food, said Jo Natale, director of media relations. The company also deployed truck-mounted generators and leased additional generators for stores, distribution facilities and bakeshops.

“We recognize that we provide an essential service, and not just food, but prescription and over-the-counter drugs,” Natale said. “We have been planning for days by testing our generators, bringing in additional generators when necessary and securing an adequate fuel supply.”

In addition to New York, Wegmans has stores in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Some deliveries to stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland were delayed due to road closure, Natale said.

In areas seriously affected by the storm, Wegmans closed stores early Monday evening for the safety of its employees. Natale said all of those stores reopened Tuesday morning.
