First Niagara Financial Group Inc. has named Inder Koul as senior vice president and chief information officer, the Buffalo-based company announced Wednesday.

Koul joins First Niagara after serving as chief information officer for the commercial, auto finance and corporate services groups at Huntington Bancshares Inc. in Columbus, Ohio. He also was director of the enterprise project management office.

Before that, Koul was with Bank of America Corp. for seven years, as a senior executive in business processing, operations, customer service and information technology program management.

Koul will lead information technology strategy and initiatives for First Niagara’s 6,000 employees, as well as bank customers in four states, officials said. He will be based in Buffalo.

First Niagara also announced that Jeff Semonovich has been promoted to senior vice president and managing director of enterprise services and IT program governance. Semonovich will report to Koul, officials said.

Semonovich had been senior vice president and solutions delivery director since 2010. He formerly was senior vice president of information systems at Pittsburgh-based PNC Financial Services Group Inc.

First Niagara Bank N.A. ranks fifth in local deposits in the Rochester market with $1.5 billion as of June 30, data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. shows.

Nice to see a few well qualified people coming aboard. Now replace Koemel who has done a terrible job running this business for the shareholders.
