B&L completes deal for Technolas Perfect Vision

Bausch & Lomb Inc. has completed an acquisition of Technolas Perfect Vision GmbH, officials announced Monday.

Technolas Perfect Vision was established in 2009 as a joint venture of Bausch & Lomb and 20/10 Perfect Vision AG to develop femtosecond and excimer lasers surgical tools for cataract and refractive eye operations. Bausch & Lomb announced plans to acquire all outstanding shares of Technolas in November. With the acquisition completed, Technolas becomes part of the eye-care company’s surgical division.

“The Technolas Perfect Vision team has built a best-in-class femtosecond laser platform and other exciting ophthalmic products that round out Bausch & Lomb’s surgical product portfolio and position us to become a ‘one-stop shop’ for ophthalmic surgeons,” said Brent Saunders, Bausch & Lomb president and CEO, in a statement.
Femtosecond lasers use a technology called chirped-pulse amplification to deliver a highly focused cutting beam. Developed for disassembling nuclear weapons components, the technology also has dental applications.

Technolas and Bausch & Lomb started co-promoting Technolas’ Victus femtosecond laser in December after the device was cleared by European Union regulators. Technolas also is developing excimer lasers—devices that produce laser beams in the ultraviolet spectrum—for advanced refractive surgeries.

Financial details of the Technolas acquisition would not be revealed publicly, Bausch & Lomb officials said.
