Nazareth College earns national service award

Nazareth College of Rochester has been named a Presidential Award winner the 2013 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest honor a college or university can receive for commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

The award is given by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that leads President Barack Obama’s national call to service initiative. CNCS is also responsible for engaging more than 5 million Americans through Senior Corps, AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America programs.

One of five schools selected, Nazareth was noted for its special focus on early childhood education. The college has been named to the list every year since its inception in 2006.

Daan Braveman, Nazareth president, gave much of the credit to the students who fuel work in these areas.

"Nazareth has a long history of service learning and civic engagement, and believes strongly in preparing our graduates to be active leaders and participants in an ever changing world," Braveman said. "As our mission statement says, we attempt to foster in our students dedication to the ideal of community service.”
