Don't fear stigma of depression

Rochester Business Journal
June 7, 2013

Dear Editor:
I was pleased to learn from Jodie Terhune's eloquent opinion piece ("NAMI helps develop mental health solutions," RBJ, 4/26/13) that both her daughters found the right help and that they courageously advocate for others. As someone who came face to face with depression in my early 20s, it took trial and error for me to find the right help. There are many more tools available today, and the stigma is much reduced.

If anyone is putting off finding help, ask yourself: What's more important-you and your family's future, or worrying about some perceived stigma? While navigating the different mental health treatment options is not necessarily easy, the answer to that question is. So go find the professionals, supportive friends, peers and organizations, and develop your own strategy that puts it all together.
