Dredging work allows cargo ship to dock at port

An Essroc Canada Inc. cargo ship capable of carrying 7,400 tons of material docked Monday at the Port of Rochester for the first time in nearly three years, emblematic of the recently completed $1.5 million dredging project at the port.

A public-private partnership among Essroc, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-Perinton, arranged for the dredging, the first at the Charlotte port since 2009.

More than 200,000 cubic yards of sediment was removed from the Genesee River. Funding has been appropriated for a new round of dredging in 2014.

“The Great Lakes are vital to the local economy, and today’s docking shows what happens when both the public and private sector come together to move our economy forward,” Slaughter said. “I want to thank Essroc for the commitment to Rochester’s local economy.”
