Sydor Instruments gets federal grant

Sydor Instruments LLC has been awarded a $150,000 federal grant to develop a camera that will help scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island investigate the interactions of materials at the atomic scale.

The Chili-based firm received the grant through the Small Business Technology Transfer program, Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-Perinton, said Tuesday.

Sydor Instruments’ leaders said the money will be used to develop an X-ray camera for energy dispersive spectrometers. Energy dispersive spectroscopy is an analytical technique used for the elemental analysis or chemical characterization of a sample.

The camera Sydor is developing will help provide faster and more accurate data collection in applications where data accuracy is important, Sydor Instruments president Michael Pavia said.

Slaughter added that improved X-ray detection will lead to advances in industries such as thin films and energy storage devices.
